The Greek letters spell out ICTHUS, meaning Fish in Greek. The letters form an acrosstic, which in Greek is Iesous Christos, Theou Uios, Soter… which means Jesus Christ, God’s Son, the Savior.
Early Christians, right after the time of Christ were often put to death for practicing their faith, so they worshiped in secret places. A fish painted on the outside door of a house let other Christians know that they would be safe and welcome inside.
